'Love In The City' Star Kiyah Wright Explains Why She Desperately Wants A Baby, Not A Husband (VIDEO)

Why Kiyah Wright Wants A 'Baby Daddy' And Not A Husband

Kiyah Wright is an independent, successful, 35-year-old woman living in New York City. She has a fabulous career as a celebrity hair stylist, a great group of friends and a fierce determination to achieve her dreams. But there's something Kiyah doesn't have that she desperately wants: a baby.

The new OWN series "Love in the City" follows Kiyah -- as well as three other straight-talking women -- as they navigate love, loss and their lives in New York. In a sneak peek of the series premiere, Kiyah's yearning for a baby is questioned by her friend, Bershan, who worries that Kiyah's current (27-year-old) boyfriend isn't the ideal choice for a father.

"You do want to have a baby and you do want one with him?" Bershan asks. "Twenty-seven-year-old?... Even though y'all not married, not in a committed relationship?"

"We're committed," Kiyah says. "For now."

The women laugh, but Kiyah is quite serious about becoming a mother. "I'm looking for a baby daddy and not a husband first. It's so whack. I get it all twisted around," she admits.

Kiyah explains to Bershan that the timing is right. "This is my moment to do what I really want to do," she says. "I want a kid now."

"Look, I love you, I'm just making sure you're getting what you want," Bershan responds. "I don't want your time to be ticking and [your boyfriend's] not serious. I mean, how would it feel if he wasn't the good dad that you thought?"

"Well, then, I can afford my own kid and I can take care of my own child," Kiyah says with a shrug. "Period."

Regardless of what her friends think, Kiyah can't change the yearning she feels. "Over [age] 35, man, it just hits you like a ton of bricks," she says. "I want to be a mother. I have to be a mom. I have to be a mom."

The series premiere of "Love in the City" airs Saturday, April 12, at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.
