GOP Candidate Wants His Rivals To Chill Out

GOP Candidate Wants His Rivals To Chill Out

A Republican candidate for Congress is ready for some peace and quiet.

Curt Clawson, a businessman running to represent Florida in the U.S. House, launched a television ad Monday called "Quiet," featuring 30 seconds of calm, rolling waves. The ad criticizes his opponents' campaigns for continuing to run attack ads after pledging they would stop. The spot promises viewers a "few moments of peace... before the negative ads start again."

Clawson faces Florida Senate Majority Leader Lizbeth Benacquisto and former state Rep. Paige Kreegel for the Republican nomination in the race to succeed former Rep Trey Radel (R-Fla.), who resigned in January following cocaine possession charges and a short time in rehab.

The $110,000 spot aired just a week before the April 22 special election primary. According to Roll Call, Clawson's campaign has largely been self-funded -- the businessman has poured more than $2.5 million into his special election campaign.

Polls have shown the race to be a two-candidate face-off between Benacquisto and Clawson. The winner of the Republican nomination will face the Democratic nominee in a June 24 election.
