GOP Lawmaker Steals The Show With Gun-Shaped Parade Float

One GOP lawmaker has taken his support for the Second Amendment to a new height.

Alabama state Rep. Steve Hurst (R) is making his presence felt at local parades by deploying a gun-shaped barbecue grill as his float. According to a Birmingham News report, Hurst made the purchase a year ago, telling the newspaper that he wants to remind people of his role as a small business owner, while also reinforcing his belief in gun rights.

Back in February, Hurst made headlines with his push for a bill requiring the reading of a daily Congressional prayer in Alabama classrooms. HB 318 would require schools to set aside morning time "for study of the formal procedures followed by U.S. Congress," But OpenStates notes that as of April 1, the bill was indefinitely postponed by the Alabama House.

"If Congress can open with a prayer, and the state of Alabama Legislature can, I don't see why schools can't," Hurst said in February, according to the Anniston Star.

Hurst has served in the Alabama State Legislature since 1998, and faces a GOP primary contest in early June.
