Mailman Hides Mail In Dead Mom's House To 'Speed Up Route'

Where's the mail, man?

A former United States Postal Service mailman was sentenced to six months in prison Tuesday after he stashed, destroyed and delayed more than 44,900 pieces of mail over two years. Most of the letters that 34-year-old William Morse hid were kept in his dead mother's home or a rented storage facility in Dawson Springs, Kentucky, according to The Courier-Journal.

"He wanted to speed up his route," city police Capt. Craig Patterson told the paper. "I think he was lazy."

Morse admitted that he also destroyed at least 1,000 pieces of mail between March 2011 and March 30, 2013, Fox News reports. The stashed-away parcels found by investigators were eventually delivered, mostly to recipients in Dawson Springs.

Morse's lawyer maintained that his client was going through a divorce and had to pick up his kids during the day.

"It's not that he was stealing anything from it," public defender Patrick Bouldin said, according to the Daily Mail.

Only a few of the 250 customers on his route were financially affected, so his sentence was reduced.
