Ellen Page Discusses Coming Out With Ellen DeGeneres

The Beautiful Reason Why Ellen Page Is Thanking Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen Page sat down with Ellen DeGeneres this week to discuss the 'X-Men' actress' coming out at a Human Rights Campaign event on Valentines Day of this year, as well as the way coming out has changed since DeGeneres revealed she is gay in the 1990s.

At one point during the conversation Page tells DeGeneres that's she's grateful for her coming out at a time when it was "much harder and much scarier." The pair then engage in a discussion about the coming out process, and the way in which it frees someone from an intense sense of shame.

“You know you think you’re at a place where you’re like, ‘I’m so happy to be gay, I’m comfortable being gay, I love being gay,'" Page told DeGeneres, "and honestly it wasn’t until making that choice [to publicly come out] where I realized, no I was carrying a tremendous amount of shame and guilt for not being out. I felt isolated from the LGBT community and now I don’t.”

Page also recently spoke about how her life has changed since coming out, telling Flare magazine that she used to feel awkward around gay people because she felt "guilty for not being" herself.
