A Legendary Architect Designed This Home -- And You Won't Believe The Price

A Legendary Architect Designed This Home (And You Won't Believe The Price)

There are lots of great real estate deals in Detroit -- but not all of them are homes this stunning.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who lived from 1886 to 1969, is one of the most significant figures in the modernist architecture movement. Which is why it might be surprising that you can find a townhouse in a small historic district, designed entirely by him, on the market in the low six figures.

To some, the location might sound like the property's biggest catch, but it shouldn't be. The Lafayette Park complex was designed by Mies, along with urban planner Ludwig Hilberseimer and landscape architect Alfred Caldwell. It's one of the most picturesque spots in Detroit, with high-rises, townhouses and a gorgeous park. And it's near downtown and Eastern Market, which holds a sprawling farmers market every weekend, but is as natural as it is urban.

The 1,400-square-foot townhouse at 1361 Nicolet Place was built in 1959 is for sale for $159,900 -- we challenge you to find a home designed by a famous architect for that price.

The co-op is fully remodeled, with three bedrooms and one-and-a-half bathrooms. It has cork floors and geo-thermal heating and cooling.

The property was first listed for $149,000 last month, but it was taken off the market in less than a day, according to Curbed. The real estate blog also notes that these prices are about $10,000 to $20,000 higher than similar Mies townhouses on the market last year. Home prices are up across the region; the Associated Press reports that median home sale prices in the metro Detroit area (including more stable surrounding suburbs) were up 35 percent in March from the same month in 2013.
