World's Most Honest Janitor Gets To Keep $80,000 He Found In Toilet Stall

A cleaner who found close to $100,000 in a toilet stall three years ago is now flush with cash.

Chamindu Amarsinghe first stumbled upon the cash, in denominations of $50 and $100, stuffed in a toilet's sanitary bin in the bathroom of a TV company in Sydney, Australia, in August 2011. At first, he thought it was some sort of a cruel joke. But after realizing it was real, he told the Herald Sun he didn't think twice about calling his supervisor and alerting the police.

"There was too much to count. I thought someone was playing a prank on me. But when I touched the notes ... I realized it was real money," he recalled to the paper.

Though police spent the next several years puzzling over how the cash ended up in the toilet stall, no leads materialized. Since no one stepped forward to claim the money, either, Australian Magistrate Michael Smith last week awarded $81,597 of it to Amarsinghe.

Smith said that "such honesty" shouldn't go unrewarded, according to the New Zealand Herald. Detective Senior Constable Daniel Thorne added, "He's a struggling student who straight-up didn't even think of pocketing it."

According to Australia's 9News, Amarsinghe said he plans to give some of the money to help the disabled, and will also donate some to a Buddhist temple.

Making $80,000 for doing the right thing? Now that's cleaning up.
