House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) says Karl Rove may be "projecting his own weaknesses" onto Hillary Clinton by speculating that the former of secretary of state may have brain damage.
The Republican strategist reportedly made the claim during a speaking engagement last week, suggesting that Clinton may have sustained neurological damage after suffering a blood clot in her skull in late 2012.
"I think that Hillary's strength, her popularity, the prestige she enjoys has driven the Republicans to their wit's end," Pelosi said during a Wednesday interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "That's what I think. I think what he said is just -- he only makes her stronger."
Pelosi continued: "When you talk about health, you're equating it with age, too. He's not that much younger – just a couple, three years younger than Hillary Clinton. Maybe he's projecting his own weaknesses onto somebody else. But the fact is that Hillary Clinton, by dint of her experience, her strength, her stamina that she showed by running for president, by being Secretary of State -- I feel confident about her ability to serve as the President of the United States."
Rove has disputed the reports, claiming that he "never used that phrase." However, he maintains that Clinton's health is fair game.
"Look, she had a serious health episode. And I don’t know about you, but if you go through a serious health episode, it causes you to look at life a little bit differently. This was a serious deal,” Rove told Fox News.
Bill Clinton, meanwhile, vouched for his wife's health on Wednesday.
"There's nothing to it," Clinton said. "She's quicker than I am."
