CBS Eyes 24 Hour Digital Channel

CBS Eyes 24 Hour Digital Channel

CBS News is working on a digital channel, CBS Corp. chief executive Les Moonves announced Thursday.

"With all the content going digital right now, wouldn't it be a good idea to do a 24 hour digital channel?" He asked on Bloomberg Television's "Street Smart." "There's so much information that we get every day that doesn't fit into a 22 minute newscast... we can go direct to digital, so that's in the early stages under the tutelage of David Rhodes, the president of CBS News, and it's an exciting alternative to cable news."

New York Times' Brian Stelter suggested the potential benefits for CBS last year:

For CBS, which sat, sometimes glumly, on the sidelines while its rivals created cable news channels like MSNBC, an Internet channel would be a relatively low-cost way to spread out its news-gathering costs and, maybe, reach viewers who are not home for the “CBS Evening News.”

There is no timetable currently set for the launch.
