8-Year-Old Botanist Has Quite The Impressive Green Thumb

This clip is part of HuffPost Live's "Tell Me Why" series, featuring young enthusiasts discussing the subjects they're passionate about -- from horror movies to string theory -- with experts.

This adorable kid definitely understands the importance of stopping to smell the roses.

Eight-year-old botany enthusiast Maddie joined HuffPost Live's Josh Zepps on May 16 to talk about her favorite pastime: keeping her garden beautiful.

"We like to grow herbs and vegetables and flowers and shrubs," Maddie said of her family's patch of botanic paradise. "This year I'm going to do my own flower garden, so I want to plant roses and petunias, and we're gonna try tomatoes again, but they don't usually work."

When Zepps wondered why Maddie's family has bad luck with tomatoes, the whip-smart plant lover knew just what her crops are missing.

"I think in our backyard there's not enough sun, so when they try to grow, it's sort of too shady and they always die," she said.

Maddie also got the chance to talk with Diana Beresford-Kroeger, a botanist and the author of "The Sweetness of a Simple Life: Tips for Healthier, Happier and Kinder Living Gleaned from the Wisdom and Science of Nature." Maddie asked Beresford-Kroeger some of her burning questions about botany, including where the very first seed came from and how exactly flowers develop their uniquely beautiful shapes.
