In her victory speech after Tuesday's primary election in Kentucky, Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes, who will face off against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in November, distanced herself from the White House and any president -- male or female.
"I won't answer to the president, no matter who he or she might be," Grimes said.
Grimes has received support from former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton -- they both encouraged her to enter the Senate race in 2013, and Bill Clinton campaigned with Grimes earlier this year. Hillary Clinton -- who Grimes has called a "role model" -- is widely seen as a potential presidential contender for 2016.
In her speech Tuesday, Grimes also noted Obama "is not on Kentucky's 2014 election ballot" and said this year's election won't change who's in the White House. The Democrat was criticized by outside groups earlier this month for supporting the president.
Grimes has long been the Democratic primary frontrunner, and has been actively campaigning against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for months.
