If you've ever been to New York, then you know the city can sometimes seem like a living, breathing thing. Thanks to a new visualization by data consulting firm Dark Horse Analytics, we now have a stunning visual that backs up that notion.
The visualization below illustrates just how much Manhattan transforms as its residents commute every day, and the result is a beautiful, breathing-like pattern:
To create the graphic, the firm relied on data from the U.S. Census, New York City and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). It's worth noting that the visualization is not an exact representation of the schedules of each New Yorker. For example, to account for the work times, Dark Horse used national average hours data from the BLS.
The team also had to assume that each individual was at home during all non-work hours, which obviously isn't true because of happy hours and the like.
Nevertheless, the chart still gives viewers a wonderful sense of the rhythm of the city that so many know and love.
