Angels' Garrett Richards Threw The 2nd 'Immaculate Inning' This Week

WATCH: Another Pitcher Threw A Perfect Inning

It looks like 2014 is becoming the year of the "immaculate inning." Angels pitcher Garrett Richards pitched the fourth perfect inning of the season and the second of this week alone on Wednesday night.

In the bottom of the second inning, Richards struck out Houston's Jon Singleton, Matt Dominguez and Chris Carter with just nine pitches. According to MLB.com, the 26-year-old mixed it up with three cutters, two curveballs, two sliders and two fastballs.

Richards, who joined Nolan Ryan as the only Angels pitchers to throw an "immaculate inning," said after the 4-0 win that he "didn't even realize" that he struck out the side on nine pitches, via the Associated Press.

The most "immaculate innings" in one season was five in 1998, according to Baseball Almanac. Richards' perfect inning came just two days after Cleveland's Justin Masterson did it against the Boston Red Sox. Philadelphia's Cole Hamels and Tampa Bay reliever Brad Boxberger have also pitched perfect innings this season.
