Good Samaritans Donate $35,000 To Save Toddler's Eyesight

Pamela Soto has two strangers to thank -- once she grows up.

The 2-year-old would likely have lost the ability to see, if it wasn't for a big donation to fund a surgery to save the toddler's eyesight.

Danny Watson and Jimmy Cooper own Watson Construction in New Mexico. One day, Pamela's mother knocked on their door -- as well as on that of several other businesses in the area -- to see if anyone would be willing to pitch in for the expensive surgery, Yahoo Shine reports.

As it turns out, the concerned mother had knocked on the right door. Together, Watson and Cooper donated $35,000 toward the surgery, which would see one of Pamela's retinas reattached to her eye. The 2-year-old has a serious condition that causes the deterioration of the layer of tissue at the back of the eye that is responsible for converting light rays into impulses that are then transmitted to the brain.

"After thinking it over, Jimmy and I decided that it was a really neat opportunity to help someone out," 59-year-old Watson recently told Yahoo. "It would have been tragic for this girl to lose her sight at such a young age."

Though the family had already raised $5,000 for the surgery, the helpful duo decided to donate the full amount for the $35,000 surgery. The Sotos ended up using the funds they had raised on their own for travel expenses since the surgery had to be performed in Michigan, KOB Eyewitness News 4 reports. The 2-year-old reportedly underwent the operation in May and is slowly regaining full vision in both of her eyes.

Watson and Cooper made the donation anonymously in February, but chose to identify themselves and meet Pamela and her family after they were sure the surgery was a success.

"Words can't even express the way they feel," a friend, Jessica Sanchez, said on behalf of the family, according to KOB.
