The White House Is Hosting A Maker Faire, Hopes Hipsters Can Save Our Future (VIDEO)

Posted: Updated:

Between FLOTUS' green thumb and POTUS' fixation with handmade marshmallow cannons, we always knew that the first family were crafty types. So it was no surprise when the White House announced Wednesday that it would be welcoming DIYers from across the country for its first-ever Maker Faire on June 18.

"The Maker Faire... will feature makers, innovators, and entrepreneurs of all ages who are using cutting-edge tools to bring their ideas to life," the White House explained on its blog, describing the event as somewhat of an extension of the STEM initiatives the Obama administration has previously hosted.

It's unclear which makers will be showing off their creations for the president on June 18, but the day is designed to encourage "making" well beyond the executive mansion. "We want June 18 to be a nationwide Day of Making when communities across America share and celebrate their involvement in this movement," the White House says.

Stay tuned for DIY projects, maker talks and more digital extensions of the Maker Faire that are expected to make their way around the web by way of the hashtag #NationOfMakers. And check out which band Obama tapped to promo the festivities in the video above.
