The Bungle Bungle Mountain Range Is Something Out Of A Dr. Seuss Book

If Dr. Seuss could live anywhere, he'd probably pick this place.

Australia's Purnululu National Park is a whimsical place that belongs in a picture book. It's home to the Bungle Bungle Mountain Range, a collection of astounding sandstone towers. These beehive-y peaks eroded over 20 million years and rise almost 2,000 feet above sea level.

Geologists still don't completely understand how the Bungle Bungles formed, but they do know these strange formations have a cyanobacterial crust that's "encased in a skin of silica and algae" (thus their standing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Purnululu provides over 900 square miles of hidden gorges, pools and canyons with fan palms growing on the walls. The park offers oodles of challenging adventures, like pitching a creekside tent in Piccaninny Gorge or hurdling boulders in the narrow Echidna Chasm.

One of the best vantage points might come from a lookout point or, better yet, high in the sky.
