The hospice business has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past decade. What once was a collection of mostly small, religious-affiliated nonprofits is now a booming, $17 billion industry dominated by national chains, and these companies are raking in big profits in the business of dying.

But as the industry has grown, it has imperiled patient health in pursuit of boosting profits, a Huffington Post investigation found.
