7 Thoughts We Have Around Younger People

As we get older, the list of things that make us feel our age is endless -- from our graying hair to creeping waistlines to not knowing the tween sensation on the cover of People Magazine in the checkout line. But there's nothing that makes us feel as old as when we're around our spritely kids and grandkids, wondering how their generation is so utterly different.

We asked our Facebook fans to tell us their thoughts. Here are some of the things that go through their heads when they're baffled by young folks:

1. "Do you really need to be checking your phone all the time?"

Don't even get us started on texting and driving, but there are other behaviors that are equally as troubling in a different way. Like when we see kids texting while they walk down the street (and quite possibly into a street lamp) or when they've got their headphones in when they're crossing the road. While technology isn't all bad, we wish they would take a moment to step away from the emojis and into the present. You might just like what you see.

2. "Have you heard about this invention called the belt?"

No, the world doesn't need to know your preference between boxers and briefs. Besides, you wouldn't want to see your parents wearing their pants like that would you? That's what we thought. So for God's sake, please find yourself a belt.

3. "The world is your oyster."

There are many things we don't understand about younger people, but this is the one lesson we wish they would take from us. They have plenty of time, freedom, and most importantly, the energy required to chase their dreams and live the lives they've dreamed of.

"Mostly, I think how exciting it is that they have their entire lives ahead of them," reader Linda Maltz Wolff said.

4. "How do you have so much energy?!"

While we've fallen into the trap of early bedtimes, matinee movies, and waking up at the same time seven days a week, we're in awe of how young people can stay up past midnight, eat a less-than-wholesome diet, and wake up (looking fabulous) to do it all over again. Their zest for life both inspires us and baffles us.

5. "Enjoy your metabolism while it lasts."

Our kids can scarf down entire bags of greasy potato chips washed down with liters of sugary soda, and still not have an inch to pinch. Meanwhile, just looking at a jelly doughnut makes us gain a pound. Life can be so unfair.

6. "Bravo on your open-mindedness."

Every generation has their strengths. And as for the younger generations, we've got to applaud their tolerance when it comes to embracing people's differences. "I love that they don't care what color you are or what your sexual orientation is," said reader Connie McLeod.

and last but not least...

7. We think the younger generations are actually pretty great.

Many of our readers shared that they feel immense hope when looking at younger people.

"I am amazed at how far along the younger generation has come in terms of intelligence, humanitarian aid, and ingenuity," said reader Babette Hughes.

"They give me hope. They are so much more accepting, global, involved... but are still charming and naive," said reader Rebecca Woods Meredith.

Aww! Go forward little ones!
