A middle school metal band that was busking in Times Square last year might have struck it rich.
Unlocking The Truth, a trio of 12- and 13-year-old Brooklyn kids, signed a record deal with Sony that could be worth nearly $2 million, the New York Post reported last week.
"We've made it!" drummer Jarad Dawkins told the tabloid.
The band's manager, Alan Sacks, said in the article that Sony reached out after noticing a viral video of one of the group's Times Square performances. (See one above.)
But while the seven-figure deal conjures images of fancy living, album sales will have to be substantial for the band to "see the real money" on top of a $60,000 advance, the Post wrote. And according to the New York Daily News, the boys could earn up to $1.7 million if the label were to stick with them through six albums.
Don't bet against these guys, though. As The Huffington Post previously mentioned, the group -- Dawkins, Malcolm Brickhouse on guitar and Alec Atkins on bass -- said on its Facebook page that it aims to "become one of the world's best heavy metal bands." The group also wants "to encourage their fans to just be themselves and not be intimidated by what people say."
Unlocking the Truth played the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival (see the video below) and was set to perform Monday on the Vans Warped Tour.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, a rep from Sony Music confirmed the band's signing with Cherry Party, a new label venture with Sony, but declined to comment on contract specifics.
