You'd have to be a real muenster to steal a caravan of bright orange, Tillamook cheese-branded Volkswagen microbuses.
Yet, criminals in central California, a couple hundred miles northeast of Monterey, jacked three of the bright orange minibuses over the weekend, stealing the vans, along with the truck and trailer that carried them, from a hotel parking lot in the middle of the night.
While police located the stolen cheese vans, each worth $100,000, in a storage locker in Copperopolis Monday evening, the truck and trailer unfortunately suffered a worse fate and were found "severely burned."
The Manteca Police Department reports the cheese vans were located "in their original condition and appear to be undamaged." Police did not disclose what led them to the storage locker in the first place.
The vans were in California as part of Tillamook's "Loaf Love Tour," which promotes the Oregon cooperative's variety of dairy products. In a press release Monday, the company stated, "We are working closely with local Sacramento-area authorities, who are currently investigating the case."
Manteca Police are pursuing several unidentified suspects, who will presumably be grilled once they're in custody.
