Danielle Brooks Discusses The 'Beautiful' Friendship Between Taystee And Poussey On 'Orange Is The New Black'

Danielle Brooks On What 'OITNB' Gets So Right About Female Friendship

"Orange Is The New Black" has earned heaps of praise for its diverse, complex portrayal of female characters, and that point of view may be best exemplified in the ironclad friendship between fan favorites Taystee and Poussey.

"Orange" star Danielle Brooks told HuffPost Live's Marc Lamont Hill on Tuesday that her character Taystee's relationship with Poussey is a "very important" example of "women that have each other's back" and aren't afraid to be honest with one another.

"The outside eye may not look at it as positive, but it is because the way we love is hard, and sometimes we yell at each other and slap each other on the head, and that's how we communicate," Brooks said.

What makes the friendship work is its strong foundation of love, the actress added.

"Their relationship is so beautiful, and it's not false or made to just be a cute, they-get-along-all-the-time relationship," she said. "We argue, we fight, fuss, then we come back together in love."

The relationship is just as sweet off-screen as it is on the show. Brooks and Samira Wiley, who plays Poussey, attended Juilliard together and were friends for years before they booked their roles in "Orange."
