Magic pills, quick slim-down plans and fitness gadgetry for the "lazy" litter the landscape -- from Dr. Oz's TV show to the banner ads on Facebook. And if we didn't know better, we might think they're a modern invention -- distortions of real, contemporary science or merely a sign of the cynical times.

So let us comfort ourselves in the knowledge that we come by this, shall we say, optimism honestly.
