As we celebrate the last of the baby boomers turning 50 this year with our 50 over 50 series, we’re reminded: No matter how old you are it’s never too late for your dreams to come true.
Jody Martinez, a 59-year-old flight attendant, joined HuffPost Live host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani to share how she redefined success for herself post-50.
“I took another job when I was in my mid-40s that was very stressful and un-fun and I knew I had to get out of there,” Martinez recalled. “I remember saying to a girlfriend that that job was not going to be driving my life when I turned 50 … so I quit.”
After a few years, Martinez said she landed her childhood dream job of being a flight attendant at Southwest Airlines.
“When I was about 5 years old I was allowed to play stewardess on a flight that my family was on, and I was sort of hooked from then,” said Martinez. “I had applied after college but it didn’t work out, and for whatever reason it didn’t occur to me that I could try again. Then, the path just evolved anyway, sort of on its own.”
So no matter how old you are or what you want to do, don’t give up on your dreams. As Martinez put it, “Your life isn’t over when you reach a certain age. People are still vital and capable of great things even though we turn 50.”
