This Woman Didn't Come Out As A Lesbian Until After 50

Being honest with ourselves and others can take some time. For Mary Gorham Malia, being authentic meant ending her marriage and coming out as a lesbian after 50.

Malia joined HuffPost Live host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani to discuss her story of accepting her sexuality and coming out to her family and friends.

“Before coming out, before I got married, I had one experience with a woman,” said Malia. “It wasn’t a very satisfying experience so I thought, ‘Maybe I’m making it all up.’”

It wasn’t until after years of being married to a man and realizing how unfair it was to her husband and to herself that Malia knew it was time to openly come out.

“I struggled every single day in my marriage for years to be OK with being married,” said Malia. “I was spending every day daydreaming that my husband would die young."

Her husband hoped it was a phase, but Malia knew that she needed "to let him go live his life and find happiness to live mine."
