Illegal contact penalties have skyrocketed during the 2014 NFL preseason, and Richard Sherman thinks he knows why. During an interview with NBC's Josh Elliott, the Seattle Seahawks cornerback cited the ever-popular fantasy football phenomenon as the cause for the increase.
“When the fantasy football numbers need to be what they need to be, then the league needs to do what it needs to do to get it done," Sherman said. "This is a money-driven league, so whatever sells the tickets is gonna sell the tickets.”
Whether or not Sherman has a point is debatable. But there's no denying the preseason's influx of illegal contact calls:
Illegal contact penalties called in 2013 NFL regular season: 54.
Illegal contact penalties in first two weeks of 2014 preseason: 56.
