Hands Up United Honors Michael Brown With Powerful Video Tribute

Hands Up United Video Honors Michael Brown

What does “Hands Up” symbolize to you?

A handful of protesters answer this question in a touching video by the Hands Up United coalition, an anti-police brutality organization that strives to encourage “a world where we deal with harm in our communities through healing, love, and kinship.”

Since the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old gunned down by police in Ferguson, Missouri, “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” has become a widely popular gesture, chant, and hashtag for nationwide protests against police violence.

“Hands up shows that 2014 it is no different than 1914,” said one protester.

“I think it always a movement, in terms of if you are young and black, particularly male, you’ve had to do this to survive,” said another. “It’s what our mothers taught us to do.”
