'The Humbling' Trailer Showcases Al Pacino's Own Washed-Up Actor Movie

Al Pacino Gets His Own Washed-Up Actor Movie

Al Pacino plays a washed-up, suicidal actor who falls for a young lesbian (Greta Gerwig) as she vows to give up women in "The Humbling," Barry Levinson's adaptation of the 2009 Philip Roth novel. The book was an unexpected nadir for Roth, but critics at the ongoing Venice Film Festival praised Pacino's performance and had fond, if mixed, things to say about the movie. "The Humbling" will be dwarfed by the much buzzier "Birdman" when it comes to this year's washed-up actor stories, but the trailer looks like it has promise. It'll screen at this week's Toronto International Film Festival and open in limited release on Nov. 21. Written by Buck Henry ("The Graduate," "To Die For"), the movie co-stars Kyra Sedgwick, Dianne Wiest, Dan Hedaya, Charles Grodin and Billy Porter.
