'Mutant' Wave Knocks Beach Crowd Off Their Feet

Oh, you wanted to take pictures at the beach? Mother Nature doesn't care about your sightseeing selfies. Especially when she's busy hurling hurricane-force waves in your direction.

When a crowd gathered on Aug. 27 to watch the gargantuan waves at The Wedge, a beach known for its monster swells, in Newport Beach, California, Mother Nature made sure they knew exactly what she thought of their fancy cameras and smartphones.

In the video above, watch as the unsuspecting crowd gets slammed by one of the huge waves driven by Tropical Storm Maria. They probably didn't see it coming, since most of them were busy watching the surf from the tiny screens on their phones.

There are two lessons to be learned here: First, never underestimate the power of the ocean; second, it's best to stay unplugged when you're at the beach.

Yep, just a typical day at The Wedge.
