Sitting down with Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg, Childish Gambino freestyled over Hit-Boy and HS87's "Grindin' My Whole Life," and, as one has come to expect from Gambino, he destroyed the beat. Spitting lines touching on the Los Angeles Clippers and Chance The Rapper, Gambino sounds more cynical than ever, and that attitude produced some incredible punchlines.
Gambino also provided an in-depth interview that touched on his most recent release, "Because The Internet," his role in the Spider-Man cartoon show, Jaden Smith and street credibility. As an actor, comedian and music artist, Gambino has long faced criticism for being a "white rapper." He opened up to Rosenberg about his struggle to earn the respect from parts of the hip-hop community, using Drake, a rapper often labeled as soft, for comparison.
"Drake doesn't get asked, 'Are you hard enough?' or anything like that even though Drake's life is really my life," Gambino said. "I really grew up in the hood."
Gambino continued on, discussing what it means to be black in America today, weaving humor and a serious tone together throughout the conversation.
"I get it. I'm wearing a grandma sweater," Gambino said. "But I am also a black male. I still have to wear this grandma sweater when I go see my grandma in the Bronx. Who lives in a shitty neighborhood. [Where] my cousin just got shot and stabbed twice hustling there."
Toward the end of the interview, Gambino expressed his excitement for his new show, book, album and mixtape, which he said would arrive in the "next few weeks."
