James Foley's Mother Says Government Could Have Done More To Save Her Son

James Foley's Mother: US Government Could Have Done More

Diane Foley, the mother of journalist James Foley who was beheaded by ISIS in August, told CNN's Anderson Cooper Thursday night that she felt a great lack of support from the US government to help save her son's life.

"The reality of the bureaucracy," she said, "is such that we were not helped."

"You didn't feel like they were there for you?" Cooper followed up. "The U.S. government wasn't there for you?"

"Not at all," she said.

The journalist's mother said that she did not feel like the government was fully behind them, adding that she and her family were told many times not to go to the media, not to raise ransom, and to "just trust" that it would work out.

"I think our efforts to get Jim free were an annoyance [to the government]," she said.

Perhaps the worst part, she told Cooper, is that Jim would have been "saddened" the most by the government's lack of effort.

"Jim believed to the end that his country would come."
