A man wanted in connection with the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend is believed to have taken his own life just hours after authorities discovered a body inside the missing Florida woman's vehicle.
The tragic developments began to unfold Tuesday morning when police located 28-year-old Tanya Gonzalez's missing BMW near the home of her ex-boyfriend, 33-year-old Roy Ruz Blanco. In the trunk of the vehicle, investigators recovered the badly decomposed remains of a woman.
Contacted by The Huffington Post Thursday morning, Miami police declined to confirm the identity of the woman found inside Gonzalez's trunk.
However, the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's Office website has identified the remains as those of Gonzalez. The young woman's family has also confirmed the identification, The Miami Herald reported.
Gonzalez disappeared on the afternoon of Sept. 9, after she went shopping with her aunt in Midtown Miami. The aunt and niece left the shopping center in separate cars and Gonzalez was not seen alive again.
Miami police named Blanco as a person of interest in Gonzalez's disappearance on Monday. According to a spokesperson for the police department, Blanco was traveling with his mother and his Siberian husky.
A vehicle Blanco had rented, and was believed to have traveled in with his mother and dog, was found Sunday, abandoned at a Coconut Grove marina in Miami, where authorities say he rented a boat. That boat was found Monday, adrift off the coast of Key West.
On Tuesday, just hours after police discovered Gonzalez's body, a tipster contacted police in the Florida Keys to report a possible sighting of Blanco in a wooded area.
When authorities arrived on the scene, Blanco allegedly stabbed himself in the stomach with a steak knife.
Police say Blanco's mother, Marta Blanco-Mendoza, was with her son and attempted suicide by swallowing a handful of pills.
Mother and son were transported to a local hospital, where Roy Blanco died shortly after arrival.
Roy Blanco's mother remains hospitalized Thursday. And an area animal shelter is caring for his dog, police said.
Attorney Adriana Santiesteban, a family friend and spokeswoman for Gonzalez's family, told HuffPost Gonzalez had recently ended a five-year relationship with Blanco, which the attorney alleged was abusive.
"It was a very bad relationship," Santiesteban said. "She had a hard time getting out of it and was fearful of him."
Gonzalez's aunt, Yvette Oliver, said Blanco was "obsessed" with her niece. "When they broke up, he was not having it," she said. "He said, 'You're either mine or you're nobody's.' I have no doubt in my mind he is responsible."
Authorities have yet to attribute Gonzalez’s death to Blanco. A spokeswoman for Miami police said additional details in the case are expected to be released Tuesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Gonzalez's family and friends are busy planning her funeral, which is scheduled for Friday, at Miami's Vior funeral home.
"She's in a better place," Gonzalez's friend, Sabrina Porcella, told HuffPost.
