How This Piece of Technology Can Help You Be More Mindful

Normally, we don’t associate technology with meditation -- unless we're using the ancient mindfulness practice to take time away from technology and clear our heads.

Ariel Garten, cofounder and CEO of InteraXon, joined HuffPost Live host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani to discuss how her latest technological innovation, the Muse headband, can actually contribute to a calmer and more mindful state.

“It’s a brain fitness tool that helps you do more with your mind,” says Garten. “So it tracks your brain activity in real time, sends it to your smartphone or tablet and gives you exercises to improve your cognitive function or decrease your stress.”

The headband, which slips on like a pair of glasses over your forehead, can read very basic things about your brain state. This allows it to provide you with the resources to calm your mind, explains Garten.

“It teaches you to know that you can actually manage your own mental state, that you can have dominion and control over your own mind,” Garten says. “So normally when your thoughts are racing, when your mind is wandering, when you’re worrying, when you’re dreaming and drifting off, we typically don’t have methods that we can use to say ‘OK brain, come on back.’”
