Jay Paterno Is A 'Proud' Penn State Truther

It's been almost three years since the Jerry Sandusky scandal rocked Penn State, leading to the ultimate dismissal of legendary coach Joe Paterno in November 2011. The episode tarnished the university's reputation and created divisive opinions among many around the college.

Three years later, Jay Paterno — the late coach's son and former quarterbacks coach for the Nittany Lions — is doing press for his upcoming book, Paterno Legacy: Enduring Lessons from the Life and Death of My Father, which seeks to restore his father's standing in the eye of the public. In a HuffPost Live interview Thursday, Paterno embraced the "truther" designation assigned to folks who still support the elder Paterno.

"Being a truther, if that's supposed to be an insult, I'll take it any day of the week," Paterno told host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani. "I think people that want to just simply sweep this under the rug and move on, they've got something to hide."

Paterno — who is suing the university after he was fired in the wake of the Sandusky scandal — said he still attends every home game. But he is critical of Penn State's response to the situation and the Freeh Report, the damning account of the alleged cover-up.

"Isn't that the goal of any great university? To seek the truth wherever it leads? We have said from day one: two years ago, before the Freeh report came out, I said, 'Look, one thing I can tell you, we don't fear the truth.' Apparently they do."
