Mark Kelly: Even After Her Injury, Gabrielle Giffords' Relationship With Guns 'Has Not Changed'

Despite sustaining a traumatic brain injury following a 2011 assassination attempt, former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords isn’t wary of firearms.

In fact, she still shoots them, her husband Mark Kelly said in an interview with HuffPost Live on Tuesday.

“Gabby’s a gun owner,” he said. “She’s been a gun owner for a long time. And when she couldn't shoot with her right hand anymore, she’ll shoot with her left. Just like she has to do everything with her left hand.”

Kelly spoke with HuffPost Live's Alyona Minkovski about Enough: Our Fight to Keep America Safe from Gun Violence, the book he wrote with Giffords.

“She’s not afraid of gun violence,” Kelly said of his wife. “She was shot first. Of 19 people, she was the first person. So she doesn’t remember any of that. ... So her relationship with guns and firearms and her belief about gun laws hasn’t changed.”

Giffords' stance on gun control is particularly nuanced. Although her advocacy group, Americans for Responsible Solutions, recently faced criticism for its "mean" gun control ads -- which were later pulled -- Giffords is still a staunch supporter of gun rights, Kelly explained.

“When Washington, D.C., was looking to expand gun rights so people who lived in Washington could have the same Second Amendment rights as other people, she supported that reform, and she still would today,” he said.
