Suspect In Missing UVa. Student Case Twice Accused In College Sex Assaults

The man charged with kidnapping missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham was investigated for two alleged sexual assaults at Virginia colleges he attended, according to school officials and prosecutors.

On Wednesday, officials at Christopher Newport University made public a "criminal incident information" report stating that Jesse Matthew was investigated in a Sept. 7, 2003 campus sex assault, according to ABC News. The case was investigated by campus police.

That report was released just days after Lynchburg prosecutors confirmed that Matthew as accused of another alleged sex assault that took place at Liberty University in Oct. 17, 2002.

Matthew, 32, attended both colleges. He was not charged in either instance, and left school following each investigation. Matthew's attorney declined to comment on the cases, telling the Washington Post that he was "not aware of the particular details of either event."

Officials at Christopher Newport University said they released the incident report after consulting with Virginia State Police.

"The success of the criminal investigation is paramount at this time," school officials said in a statement.

Matthew was captured in Texas following a manhunt in September. The suspect has also been connected to the 2009 murder of Morgan Harrington, who, like Graham, vanished from the Charlottesville campus.
