The Life-Changing Possibilities Of A Mental Health Check-Up

There's a good chance you went to your doctor for a physical check-up in the last year or two. But when was the last time you got a check-up for your mental health?

In honor of National Depression Screening Day, Dr. Douglas Jacobs, founder and medical director of Screening For Mental Health, joined HuffPost Live host Caroline Modarressey-Tehrani to discuss the importance of checking patients for mental health issues the same way that doctors check for physical health problems.

"It's a day in which information about depression is communicated to the public -- basically that it is an illness, not a weakness, that there are specific signs and symptoms, and that treatments are available," Jacobs told HuffPost Live.

Screening can help patients get the treatment and medical advice they need as quickly as possible, according to Jacobs.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that National Depression Screening Day was created by the American Psychiatric Association, when it was in fact created by Screening For Mental Health. The story has been updated.
