A man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of Amiracle Williams, a 3-year-old fatally shot last week in Detroit during a fight that reportedly started with a dispute on Facebook.
On Monday, 23-year-old Donnie Everett of Detroit was charged with first-degree murder and felony murder. He was also charged with five counts of assault with intent to murder, and prosecutors allege he shot three others who were injured in Thursday's shooting.
Police say the shooting happened after several young women began physically fighting over an argument on social media outside the east side residence where Amiricle lived with her family.
Amiracle's father believed his daughters were in danger and shot one of the people at the scene, police said Friday. Then, another man opened fire with a machine gun, striking Amiracle, her mother, father and 17-year-old sister. Two police officers took Amiracle to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
"She was just a joy to me," Amiracle's mother, Freida Tiggs, told WXYZ-TV last week at a vigil for her daughter. "Just seems like I can't make it without her."
By Friday morning, police had two suspects under arrest: the alleged second shooter and the alleged driver of a getaway vehicle, who had also been shot in the incident.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig said Friday the alleged shooter had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for a felony charge in Virginia. At least one of the men has been involved in local gangs, he said, though the shooting itself was not thought to be gang-related.
"[The shooting was] a decision made by a coward, once again, another coward that goes out and engages in senseless violence," Craig said.
Everett is expected to be arraigned Monday afternoon.
Note: The Wayne County prosecutor's office initially said Donnie Everett was 24. They have since issued a correction stating he is 23. This post has been updated with his correct age.
