How Should LGBT Teens Navigate Sleepovers? Parents, Teens Sound Off

How Should LGBT Teens Navigate Sleepovers?

Kristin Olson and her daughter Lucy joined HuffPost Live this week for a frank discussion on sleepover protocol for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) teens.

Noting that she and her daughter "have a really good relationship," Olson nonetheless pointed to the challenges involved when it came to the subject of sleepovers for parents of LGBT kids.

"The first thing that everybody said was, 'Well, she can't get pregnant.' That's definitely true," Olson, who is a blogger at The Parents Project, said. "But that's not the only factor that I think comes into this. We're talking about kids, we're talking about kids being hurt in other ways. So we really had to think about what the rules should be."

Ultimately, her solution wasn't that much different than that of parents of straight teens: "If [my daughter identified as heterosexual and] it were a boy, what would I let her do? If she had a boy over, would I let her watch a movie in the TV room with the door closed? Probably not."

She then noted, "We had to think about it in a completely new way."

Also joining the chat was Jacob Rudolph, the New Jersey student who came out as LGBT in an impassioned high school awards speech last year and is now the president of Upride at University of Miami. Check out what he had to say below.
