Parents With Kids In Foster Care Ask Dr. Phil For Advice On Regaining Custody

Seventeen-year-old Andrue claims that his mother and stepfather physically and mentally abused him and his three younger siblings for years. The teen says he attempted to end his life out of desperation to escape the alleged abuse.

When the family sat down with Dr. Phil nine months ago, the parents strongly denied the abuse allegations. But after the episode aired, Oregon Child Protective Services got involved. Based at least in part on Andrue’s testimony, they removed the three younger children from the home and placed them in foster care.

Now, Minny and Lon turn to Dr. Phil for advice regarding regaining custody of their children.

Dr. Phil tells the parents what he believes they must do if they’re serious about regaining custody of their children. “You’re going to have to show, ‘I understand how what we did before created a problem for these children.’ You’re going to have to be calm. You’re going to have to comply with the rules, whether you like them or whether you don’t,” he says. “You can be pissed off, you can think they’re abusing their power. Maybe they are. You can be right, or you can be happy. If you want to be right, then fight the system and say goodbye to your children.”

See what happens when there’s a home visit to both Minny and Lon’s residences on Wednesday’s show. Check here for local listings.
