Republican Cam Cavasso was defeated by Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) in the state's U.S. Senate race Tuesday.
This was Cavasso's third time seeking the seat. Schatz was appointed to the Senate in late 2012 by Governor Neil Abercrombie (D) to fill the opening left by the death of Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii).
Schatz clinched the Democratic nomination by beating Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D-Hawaii) by a slim margin in an August primary.
A Republican hasn't been elected to the U.S. Senate from Hawaii since 1970.
