Democrat Ed Markey was re-elected to the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.

Markey has represented Massachusetts in the Senate since 2013, when John Kerry vacated his seat to serve in Obama's Cabinet as secretary of state. Markey served as a member of the House of Representatives for almost 40 years prior to joining the Senate.

Markey defeated Republican candidate Brian Herr.
