Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.) was projected to defeat Democrat Charles Hatchett in the state's 1st District on Tuesday.

Whitfield chairs the House Subcommittee on Energy and Power, a panel with considerable heft for a congressman from coal-rich Kentucky. He significantly outraised his challenger in the race, which was widely seen as uncompetitive.

Hatchett, a real estate broker and auctioneer, also lost to the Republican by large margins in past elections.
