David Valadao Defeats Amanda Renteria In California House Race

David Valadao TK House Race

Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.) defeated Democrat Amanda Renteria in the race to represent California's 21st Congressional District.

Valadao, first elected to Congress in 2012 after serving a term in the California State Assembly, was one of three House Republicans to vote a comprehensive immigration reform bill proposed by Democrats last year.

"I've gotten beat up from my own side for it, I think it's very important to get it done," Valadao, a dairy farmer and the child of Portuguese immigrants, said during an October debate. "My parents are immigrants; I learned so much about why it's important to have real opportunities and I think that's what made this country great."

Renteria, the daughter of migrant farm workers, also made immigration a centerpiece of her campaign. She was the first Latina to serve as a chief of staff in the Senate, holding the post in Sen. Debbie Stabenow's (D-Mich.) office.
