Meet The 18-Year-Old Who Made History In This Year's Election

Teen Saira Blair reportedly contributed $4,000 to her own campaign to let voters know she was serious.

On Tuesday, the citizens in West Virginia's 59th District took her seriously as well, delivering Blair a resounding victory over her Democratic opponent for a seat in the state's House of Delegates.

At age 18, Blair will be the youngest state lawmaker in the nation, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing the National Conference of State Legislatures.

"I'm just elated," she told NBC.

Blair, a West Virginia University freshman, said she would take off spring semester to attend the legislature’s 60-day session in Charleston, NPR reported. She'll be deciding on measures from a fiscally conservative perspective with hopes of reducing taxes for businesses.

Blair took to Facebook to express her gratitude, while noting that "my generation’s voice, fresh perspective and innovative ideas can help solve some of our state’s most challenging issues."

Blair even left her opponent impressed.

"Quite frankly a 17- or 18-year-old young woman that has put herself out there and won a political campaign has certainly brought some positive press to the state," 44-year-old attorney Layne Diehl told the Wall Street Journal.

Incidentally, the politicking teen will have company when she hits the state capitol; her dad, Craig Blair, is a state senator.
