CNN Reporter Hit With Tear Gas In Mexico

Rafael Romo, CNN's Senior Latin American Affairs Editor, was hit with tear gas while reporting on violent protests in Chilpancingo, Mexico, this past week.

The demonstrations were sparked by reports that 43 missing students had been murdered by gang members at the behest of Iguala Mayor Jose Luis Abarca, who was arrested by authorities last Tuesday. The victims were initially abducted in September by corrupt police officers, according to Mexican Attorney General Jesus Murillo.

Amid scenes of police in riot gear facing off against civilians holding golf clubs and metal pipes, their faces covered with bandanas, Romo struggled to finish his report.

"We can now really feel a tear gas," he said. "It's hard to breathe, my eyes are burning."

Romo tweeted about the experience Thursday:
