Obama's Step-Grandma Is Helping Kids And Creating Change We Can Believe In, Too

President Obama's only living grandparent is working on changing the education system in Kenya.

Mama Sarah Obama, the president's step-grandmother, created the Mama Sarah Obama Foundation to provide disenfranchised women, children and orphans with the education and welfare support they need in Kogelo village, Kenya.

With translating help from Debra Akello, the foundation's executive director, Obama explained to HuffPost Live's Alyona Minkovski that she was denied an education growing up in Kenya because she is a woman.

"She says she never went to school, she was denied an education and she wants every child to get an education," Akello said, and added, "She knows the value of education, so that’s why she wants to leave this legacy of good schools in Kogelo."

When asked how President Obama feels about her organization, the 94-year-old humanitarian said, "He feels great about it. It’s a good thing."
