Snow in November is an unwelcome sight for many -- but not Da Mao the panda.
Six-year-old Da Mao is one of two giant pandas living at the Toronto Zoo. On Monday morning, a security camera at the zoo caught Da Mao having a ball in the snow, running, tumbling and even nibbling on the white stuff.
"During today's snowfall, our cameras caught giant panda Da Mao 'bear-bogganing' in his outdoor exhibit. Perhaps he's discovered a new winter sport?" reads the zoo's video description.
Wild giant pandas live in temperate forests in central China, according to the Smithsonian. That area receives about 30 to 40 inches of precipitation each year, but Toronto is colder and gets more snow. Da Mao, who was born at the Chengdu Research Base of Panda Breeding in 2008 and has been in Canada since March 2013, was also seen frolicking in the snow in a video from February. He has adapted well.
“He loves the snow even more when it’s fresh and it’s actually snowing,” Maria Franke, the zoo’s curator of mammals, told the Toronto Star last year. “He makes his own luge track, his own toboggan hill. He should be in the Olympics.”
The Toronto Zoo works to support giant panda conservation with their Endangered Species Reserve Fund, a program that raises money for funding research and education initiatives.
