Convicted Rapist Poses As Cop, Sexually Assaults Teen: Police

A Brooklyn man who has two prior rape convictions is accused of impersonating a police officer and coercing a teenager into a sex act.

Walter Barnes is charged with rape, aggravated sexual abuse and impersonating a police officer. The 47-year-old, who was convicted in 2002 for the rapes of two girls, 14 and 17, was arrested Wednesday, NYPD said.

His most recent victim, an 18-year-old girl, told police that Barnes pulled up to her in his car Oct. 2, and offered her a ride to the store to buy cigarettes.

Once the girl was in the car, Barnes allegedly began speaking police jargon into a handheld radio in an attempt to con her into thinking he was was a cop.

Barnes then pulled over and told the young woman that he would arrest her unless she performed a sex act on him, police said. She reluctantly complied out of fear, and then did it a second time after the suspect repeated the threat.

When Barnes threatened to arrest her for a third time and tried to undress her, the victim fought back and bolted from the car, getting help at a nearby building.

The New York Daily News reports that the state Division of Criminal Justice Services lists Barnes as a "violent sexual offender" with a "high risk of repeat offense."

Cops think that Barnes may have impersonated an officer before, and coerced other women into sex. The NYPD is asking other potential victims to come forward.
