College Gymnast Found Dead In Dumbwaiter

Police in Wisconsin are investigating the death of a college student found lifeless inside a 3-by-3 foot food elevator at the restaurant where she worked.

Brooke Baures, 21, studied social work at Winona State University, where she also was a member of the gymnastics team. She was pronounced dead on Monday night following a 911 call at WingDam Saloon & Grill, where she worked as a waitress.

Although it's unclear why Baures was in the restaurant's dumbwaiter, Buffalo County Sheriff's Office investigators said that there's no initial indication of foul play, according to KARE. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine her cause of death.

Reached for comment this afternoon, Jason Mork, the only cop in Fountain City (population 859), tells Fox 9, "I highly doubt [Baures] was using [the elevator] to move herself."

She was likely "using it to move food," he adds.

"Brooke was a leader on that team and a very talented gymnast," Eric Schoh, WSU athletic director, said in a statement. "This is a tremendous loss for our community, and we ask that you keep Brooke and her family, friends, coaches and teammates in your thoughts."
