The Holy Monkeys Of Nepal's 'Monkey Temple' Captured In Stunning Video

World traveler and videographer Devin Graham has captured stunning footage of monkeys living at one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring religious sites: Nepal’s Swayambhunath, also known as “Monkey Temple.”

Located on top of a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, the UNESCO World Heritage site and its surroundings are said to be home to hundreds of monkeys, considered holy by believers. Legend has it that the monkeys were formed from the head lice of the Manjusree Bodhisattva, who in Buddhism represents the embodiment of wisdom and, according to folk tradition, raised the hill upon which Swayambhunath stands.

Travel guide publisher Lonely Planet has described visiting Swayambhunath as “an intoxicating experience,” where you’re “mobbed by monkeys” and ancient carvings are “jammed into every spare inch of space.”

Graham himself said on Instagram this week that the temple complex was “one of my favorite places I've ever been, and probably the most fascinating.”
